The availability of services is reduced during evenings, weekends and public holidays and the priority for visits will be assessed based on urgency.
The District Nursing Service (DNS) provides short and long-term nursing care in your home or another suitable environment. Our team of registered and enrolled nurses offer a range of services that can include;
- Wound management
- Medication monitoring, management and education
- Diabetes education, support and management
- Stomal and catheter care
- General health monitoring and education
- Health assessments, service advice and referrals
- Showering/hygiene assessments
- Advanced Care Planning – making decisions about your future healthcare treatment options
- Advice and assistance with referrals to other services
- Palliative care support
Services are available 7 days a week, from 8.00 am to 8.30 pm to people living in Wangaratta and the surrounding region. However, these services are reduced during evenings, weekends and public holidays. Visits by our nurses are limited during these times and you will be assessed based on the urgency of your situation.
If you or someone you know, would benefit from DNS support please contact us to discuss your needs. Eligibility and suitability are considered on an individual basis.
If you are aged over 65 years please contact My Aged Care on 1800 200 422 or visit the website www.myagedcare.gov.au as they will be able to assist you with the referral to DNS and any other support services you may require.
All referrals to DNS are prioritised according to need. If we are unable to provide care at the first request date, you will be placed on a waiting list and other arrangements for your care will be made until we can provide you with a date for admission to DNS.

The cost of DNS is based on an income test, which will be discussed with you or your caregiver prior to the commencement of services.

- Department of Veterans Affairs (gold card, white care, orange card)
- Post-Acute Care
- HACC Program for Younger People(Criteria based)
- Home Care Packages
- TAC/ Work cover
- Private Health Insurance
- Commonwealth Home Support Programme (over 65 years)
Accounts will be from Northeast Health Wangaratta on a monthly basis and can be paid at the main reception desk of the hospital, or by return mail.
