Northeast Health Wangaratta (NHW) is supporting the Single Employer Model, an initiative designed to strengthen the training and employment experience for rural generalist trainees in Victoria.
Managed by the Victorian Rural Generalist Program (VRGP), the Single Employer Model enables eligible rural generalist trainees to be employed by a single health service while completing training across hospital and primary care settings.
The model provides greater continuity and certainty for trainees, allowing them to maintain consistent employment conditions and entitlements as they move between different stages and locations of their training.
For regional health services such as NHW, the model also supports efforts to attract, develop and retain the next generation of doctors in rural and regional Victoria.
Supporting doctors to train and work regionally
Rural generalists play an important role in regional healthcare, providing a broad range of medical services and helping communities access high-quality care closer to home.
Through the Single Employer Model, trainees can gain experience across different clinical environments while remaining connected to their employing health service. Trainees may also be seconded to other health services to consolidate their skills or undertake advanced skills training while remaining on the same employment contract.
By creating a more connected training pathway, the model aims to make rural generalist training more attractive and accessible, while encouraging doctors to establish their careers and lives in regional communities.
Who is eligible?
The Single Employer Model is available to eligible full-time and part-time trainees who are registered with the Victorian Rural Generalist Program and are undertaking, or intending to undertake, an eligible rural generalist training pathway.
This may include trainees enrolled with the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) or Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine (ACRRM), subject to current program eligibility requirements.
