NHW Launches Disability Action Plan 2026-2028

Northeast Health Wangaratta (NHW) has launched its Disability Action Plan 2026-2028, reaffirming its commitment to creating a health service and workplace that is accessible, inclusive and welcoming for people with disability.

The plan outlines a range of actions designed to improve access to healthcare, employment opportunities, facilities and services, while strengthening participation and inclusion across all areas of the organisation.

Developed through consultation with staff, consumers, community members and disability services, the Disability Action Plan provides a roadmap for reducing barriers and ensuring people with disability can access the same opportunities, services and experiences as everyone else.

Executive Director People and Corporate Operations Kim Bennetts said the plan reflects NHW’s commitment to creating meaningful and lasting change.

“People with disability should be able to access healthcare, employment and community participation opportunities in environments that are welcoming, safe and inclusive. This plan provides a clear framework for how we will continue working towards that goal.”

The Disability Action Plan focuses on four key areas:

  • Reducing barriers to people with disability accessing goods, services and facilities.
  • Reducing barriers to obtaining and maintaining employment.
  • Promoting inclusion and participation in community life.
  • Achieving tangible changes in attitudes and practices that discriminate against people with disability.

The new plan builds on a number of achievements delivered through NHW’s previous Disability Action Plan, including the establishment of a Sensory Room in the Admission and Day Stay Unit, introduction of the Disability Ally Program, employment of a Health Ambassador through Down Syndrome Victoria, autism awareness training for Emergency Department staff, accessibility improvements across NHW facilities and the development of resources to support staff in providing inclusive care.

The Disability Action Plan 2026-2028 includes a range of new initiatives aimed at further improving accessibility and inclusion, including enhanced staff education, improved consumer engagement, accessibility resources, disability awareness activities and initiatives designed to strengthen employment opportunities for people with disability.

Ms Bennetts said the plan recognises that accessibility and inclusion are ongoing responsibilities that require continuous improvement.

“While we are proud of the progress made to date, we know there is always more work to do. This plan will help guide our efforts as we continue to listen, learn and work alongside people with disability to improve experiences across our organisation.”
