Northeast Health Wangaratta (NHW) has marked National Reconciliation Week with the unveiling of a significant cultural artwork created by respected local respected Elder and proud Gurnai Kurnai man Uncle Kevin Bell, reinforcing the organisation’s commitment to reconciliation, cultural respect and connection with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.
The wallaby skin, now proudly displayed in the main hospital corridor, was officially unveiled during a special gathering attended by staff and community members. The event featured an Acknowledgement of Country, cultural performances and Opportunity to learn and reflect on the cultural significance of the art piece.
For Uncle Kevin, Unveiling was a space to share cultural knowledge and connection through a meaningful artwork that will now become a lasting part of the hospital environment.
“I am grateful for the care and support I have received from Northeast Health Wangaratta over the years, and it means a lot to be able to give something back through this wallaby skin,” Uncle Kevin said.
“This piece represents connection, healing, culture and respect. I hope it helps create moments for people to learn more about Aboriginal culture and encourages conversations that bring people together.”
Executive Director People and Corporate Operations Kim Bennetts said National Reconciliation Week provides an important opportunity for reflection, learning and strengthening relationships.
“National Reconciliation Week is an important reminder that reconciliation is a shared journey. It is about building understanding, recognising the histories and cultures of First Nations peoples and creating meaningful connections that strengthen our communities,” Ms Bennetts said.
“We are honoured to have Uncle Kevin’s wallaby skin displayed within our hospital. It is a powerful symbol of culture, healing and connection, and reflects our ongoing commitment to creating a welcoming and culturally safe environment for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.”
The unveiling forms part of NHW’s ongoing commitment to advancing reconciliation and fostering stronger partnerships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities across North East Victoria.
National Reconciliation Week is held annually from 27 May to 3 June and encourages all Australians to learn about shared histories, cultures and achievements while exploring how each of us can contribute to reconciliation in Australia.
