NHW maternity unit

We provide a supportive environment for new mums with 24-hour care from our team of dedicated midwives and medical specialists. The ward consists of six postnatal beds, four birth suites and a special care nursery with six cots.

As a new mum, we encourage you to keep your baby close to you during your stay as this helps create that special bond and builds your confidence as you learn how to respond to its needs and cues in a supportive environment.

Visiting

We understand that having a new baby is a very exciting time, but it is also exhausting for all involved. Once the baby is born, there is much to learn and new mums are often up several times through the night. For this reason, we like to observe a recognised rest time from 1.00pm to 3.00pm and ask that all visitors leave by 8.00pm.

For premature, unwell and vulnerable babies it is requested that only immediate family visit with a limit of two visitors at a time. A parent must accompany siblings to the newborn.

Partners are welcome to stay overnight.

Going Home

As long as both you and your baby are well, you will be able to go home within 1-2 days of a vaginal birth and 2-3 days of a caesarean section.

Before you leave the hospital, a domiciliary midwife (community midwife) will visit you in the Maternity Ward to help plan and prepare for when you go home. They will also visit you and your baby at home usually within the first 24 hours following discharge, for postnatal assessment and to assist in the transition from hospital to home.

They can also arrange a referral to other services within the community. For example, our Lactation (Breastfeeding) Clinic can assist with any breastfeeding concerns.

Please remember that it is compulsory by law that your baby is safely transported in an approved baby restraint fitted in your car.
