Childbirth EducationChildbirth education and parenting classes are held throughout the year by our experienced midwives. During these classes we will provide you with lots of information about;

  • How to prepare for the birth of your baby
  • What to expect during labour and birth
  • What to expect in hospital
  • Breastfeeding information
  • What to expect during early parenthood.

Classes also give you the chance to look around our facilities, meet some of our staff and meet other people who are going through pregnancy and parenthood.

At what stage in my pregnancy should I go to classes?

The best time to attend these classes is between 28 and 32 weeks. This gives you an opportunity to determine what birthing options you might like before your baby arrives, even if the baby arrives earlier than expected.

Is there anywhere else I can go to classes?

You might live closer to a health facility that also offers childbirth classes. You can choose to go there and still look around our facilities. Contact your local hospital for more information about classes available in your area.

There are also independent antenatal education options available such as Calmbirth, Hypnobirthing and Lamaze.

How do I register for classes?

You can book your childbirth and parenting classes when you see your midwife at around the 16-week mark of your pregnancy, or phone +61 (03) 5722 5225

Classes are held in the University of Melbourne Teaching & Learning Centre, situated behind the hospital. View NHW Visitors Map for details.
