Our Emergency Department (ED) is always open and is staffed by a dedicated team of health professionals specialising in emergency medicine and critical care.
On arrival, you will see a specialist emergency nurse called the ‘triage nurse’, who will assess your condition by asking questions about your symptoms and performing some routine checks. Your triage category will be determined based on the urgency of your condition.
Triage categories are set by the Department of Health and Human Services as a guide for hospital staff, allowing patients with life-threatening problems to be seen first.
Please DO NOT leave the Emergency Department without informing a staff member.
There are five triage categories:
- Immediate (life-threatening)
- Emergency (could become life-threatening)
- Urgent (not life-threatening)
- Semi-urgent
- Non-urgent (needs treatment when time permits).
Food and Drink
Please do not eat or drink before being seen. You may need tests or procedures that require you not to eat or drink beforehand. Speak to the triage nurse if you are unsure.
Safety of staff and visitors
A Code of Behaviour exists to ensure a safe and friendly environment for patients, visitors and staff. Northeast Health has security staff on site 24 hours a day throughout the hospital. If staff, patients or visitors feel threatened or view inappropriate behaviour, security or police will be called immediately.
