Ferruccio Tonini recently celebrated 50 years of working in nursing at Northeast Health Wangaratta (NHW) at our recent Annual General Meeting.

He started at the NHW (then Wangaratta District Base Hospital) in 1973 and is currently the Associate Director of Nursing.

There have been many changes to the hospital during his time, particularly around staffing and the number of beds.

Back in 1973, Mr Tonini said there were 35 more beds but thanks to technological advancements they can still give the same care with fewer beds.

“In terms of emergency technology, the reason we needed 35 extra beds was because if you broke your leg in those days you’d be in hospital for six weeks whereas today you’re in hospital for two or three days,” he said.

Ferruccio is a highly respected and well-regarded Associate Director of Nursing, appreciated for his exceptional work ethic, compassion, empathy and good humour. His problem-solving skills are second to none and we are grateful and proud of Ferruccio’s incredible contribution to NHW over five decades.
