The annual Staff Excellence Awards were held at the Wangaratta Turf Club last night. It was an evening of celebration with over 200 staff from Northeast Health Wangaratta acknowledged for their academic and professional achievements throughout 2018.
The awards were followed by an inspiring presentation from one of Australia’s greatest champions, in sport and life, Kurt Fearnley AO. Kurt, captivated, inspired and amused the audience with his
extraordinary story. Everyone needs to have the privilege of listening to this remarkable Australian.
Kurt Fearnley AO
Kurt Fearnley is a three-time Paralympic gold medalist and two time Commonwealth Games gold medalist. He has won over 30 marathons, including New York, Chicago and London in a career spanning more than 20 years. In 2009 Kurt crawled the Kokoda track, in Papua New Guinea, to raise awareness of men’s health. Kurt was also a member of the winning Sydney to Hobart yacht crew, Investec Loyal, in 2012.
Kurt’s exploits both in and out of sport over many years have seen him recognised with a number of honours including 2019 NSW Australian of the Year, 2009 NSW Young Australian of the Year and 2018 The Don winner as the Australian sports person most likely to inspire the nation. In 2018 Kurt was recognised as an Officer of the Australian Order and received an Honorary Doctorate from Griffith University for his contribution to sport and disability advocacy.
